Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Essay - 1664 Words
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Brave New World take place in dystopian futures. Technological advancements have been beneficial to society, but at the cost of the citizensââ¬â¢ humanity. In Do Androids Dream of electric Sheep?, Rick Deckard is a bounty hunter who kills Androids who have escaped from other world colonies. The Rosen Corporation creates the androids to mimic humans to a point where it is hard to distinguish between the two. In Brave New World, the World State is responsible for genetically engineering humans. These ââ¬Å"humansâ⬠do not have any of the characteristics of a modern day human. Humans are emotional creatures. People in the World State lack all emotion, unlike in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, where the onlyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦When Rick is questioning Luba Loft, she accuses him of being an android by asking him, ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t androids sometimes go around with false memories (Dick 102)?â⬠These false memories mak e the androids believe that they are human, but in actuality it just makes them more artificial. For the androids that have been implanted, the false memories do reduce free will since the memories will heavily shape an androidââ¬â¢s thoughts. The people in Brave New World are very similar to the Androids because they are both essentially slaves. The androids are created to become slaves of the people on the colonies. During an advertisement for emigration, the television announcer says, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ duplicates the halcyon days of the pre-Civil War southern states! (Dick 17)â⬠One of the incentives for going to the colonies is the entitlement to an android slave. ââ¬Å"Halcyonâ⬠is used because the announcer wants to persuade a person to emigrate, but Dick uses it as euphemism for slavery. The harsh subject matter is lessened because they are merely talking about androids. This television spot shows the lack of empathy humans have towards androids. The androids also did not have the freedom to do what they wanted. Similarly, the workers in Brave New World are also created to be like working machines in an assembly line.
